Winter Wednesday

Yes, as Teacher is posting, the snow is coming down! Happy Winter is a month early!

Mornings, mornings, what are they good for? The Homeschool votes for stretching, Spelling and Bible Lesson before playdate! Here's our Vowel Jumping game with Student's current list of words.





Thanks to Kaia and Kien for playing so well this morning. From Play-Doh to Transformers, they action-play was complete!

Continuing in Math with tally marks and graphs, Student chose 5 colors in the living room and tallies how many times they appeared and then created this bar graph. And she reached the half-way mark in her Health lessons for the year!



As though the blank space shouldn't be left there, just EMPTY, she filled it with design. A bar graph with PIZAZZ! Now that's our student. Warrior didn't complete his Math and counting until he weaseled Teacher into delaying his nap! (And it's the iMac, our only camera right now, that reflects the images and the letters are BACKWARDS! )

As for Social Studies, Warrior learned about veterinarians and their role in serving our community. Student, reviewed the symbols of America and the first Thanksgiving. Speaking of holidays, we are counting down to the BREAK next week!

Warrior's Reading continued with his ladders and is ready to add another special sound tomorrow. Here's his choice of iMac photo with his letter ladder.



Awana finds itself into our schedule, as it's Wednesday, and so Warrior works on his memory verse John 3:16. He's not quite there, but with the help of a song he'll be there in no time. Blessings of unity in datenight for Teacher & Principal during the kiddos' time away!

Tuesday Anew

With the overflowing cup, the Homeschool welcomed new books and manipulatives today. Mascot carried them just like lil Red Riding Hood. Over the carpet and through the house, he was quite the busy boy!

Student dug into the books and spend an hour in The Rooster Crows. Her favorite rhyme: Teddy Bear Teddy Bear...and so we put the new jumprope to use and tried the skipping rope rhyme out! Student has been keeping a jumping rope chart this week, and so we just got extra practice! Ans since our newly acquired skills weren't much to post in a video, we posted some inspiration for our future practices!



Really, when the Math curriculum says it's a NEW CONCEPT, Student complains that she already knows it. She keeps wondering when it's going to get harder...guess God gave some a love for fractions, and Teacher should be thankful! As she is a breeze to instruct, there are no complaints here! We brought Warrior into the money lesson today, and all went well with the coins and bills.

In her daily chores, Student has moved up to the level of folding her own clothes, as well as her familiar putting away in her room. She was enthusiastic in her FIRST load, and Teacher can't wait to show her the new machine workings! She'll be ready to move out in no time! Oh, wait! There's still finances, cooking, driving, and so many more lessons from on high before that time comes...and so the learning continues!



(If Teacher can get through the finance material then it should begin as soon as Warrior's health unit is complete next week. But, these plans have been laid since August...so Teacher's hope is in the Lord!) AMEN

Warrior really was present today. Handwriting, Awana memorizaion, Reading NUT and WET and working yet more on his name...the camera just missed out on him today. Maybe since he missed his routine nap, he was quite the mover and shaker...thus the camera wasn't fast enough to catch him!

Mascot, on the other hand, is a roamer. A wanderer content in his aiding the others with learning and then discovering the big backyard all on his own.

Wednesday Can Do

Added to the I Can list for Student's first grade year:
I can name and show you where the oceans are.
I know where South America is, and Brazil.
I can find Kansas on the globe.

Student also added to her Geographic knowledge today the location of the following:
Appalachian Mountains
Rocky Mountains
Mississippi River



Warrior wanted to find Egypt, and sighted the Red Sea. Student, reviewing other world facts, it is amazing to remember starting this first year journey and her excitement of a real globe in the Homeschool! Oh how the time has flown! Oh how the blessings have overflown! Praise to you, Lord of all! During Bible History today, the two were discussing who they'd see in heaven and which jobs they hope to have!

Phonics brought a Spelling review of special sounds throughout the year..and yes, it was rough:

Student's seatwork helped to reinforce these special sounds. She would much rather learn something new, but so go the lessons of perseverance. Slow and steady wins the race, little one!

Preparing Blueberry Bang, and some cards for our beloved pastor's 60th bday, Student and Warrior created cards from their fav papers on-hand, and stickers, too! Nothing like Thomas the Train to deliver a bday greeting!



Mascot entertained himself by peering out the backdoor at the alley cats, while Student and Warrior took recess out doors.



They were in denial of the weather change from yesterday's 80 degrees to this day's 50 degrees. So with shorts with flip flops and coats they ventured out for a friendly game of tic tac toe.

History brought the story of the Bald Eagle symbol, and other eagle facts from our recent library picks. Student also fit in subtraction flashcards for Math, and a time of imagination in her room.

Warrior has been fighting the whines through his 4th round of antibiotics. And in a moment of energy explosion, he wanted to make a sack mask...oh the creativity at the Homeschool! Well, at least we waste not, and want not by creating with whatever pops out of the craft cabinet...or the utility cabinet, it goes both ways!



Reading in preparation for AWANA tonight, Student began her new Hiker book. Smiling and jewel-filled, off she goes. What love the Father has lavished upon us to bring this family a true princess.

Wednesday Wish Wash

Reading in the morning, Reading in the noontime, Reading at Supper time! Today's Reading brought this summary from Student of William Tell:

In Switzerland a long long time ago. There was an army that took over the land, and a man that became the new ruler. And, he put his hat on a pole and it was in the public square and every one had to bow to the hat. But William Tell did not. So he had to go to jail for a long long time. And so, after that happened he said he was going to let him free, but the next day his son was going to be on one side of the tow square and if the apple on his head was not shot, but his son was, he said he would shoot his son before everyone's eyes. And the next day the arrow given to shoot the child was bent, and it hit the apple instead. Everyone but him was happy. The man thought that he had more friends than he had, so the man went away and the country was free again!

Math had a tall order for Student as she completed 2 pages of seatwork and new ideas of carrying over. Her fun of equilateral shapes expanded her excitement of graph paper! And of course the triangles couldn't just be lonely shapes...Student turned them into a dino!

Self-led Art brought more spring into the Homeschool! Dutch shoes and blooms galore!



Ready for lessons tomorrow with Mrs. S, Student will deliver her full version of Long Long Ago...can't wait to move onto the next song! Teacher thinks everyone in the Homeschool will vote for that!

Computer time was a group effort today as we participated in a Live Online Event. Fun and family go together hand-in-hand! We worked on our family tree. Parts of the game were hilarious, with popcorn popping into the air and sheep running with bowls to catch the flying grain! Other parts were confusing to Warrior, as he had to sort out which grandpa went to which parent...



History in the Bible today was all about transfiguration. From the Gospels, Student reminded Teacher, that many may call them ghosts, but they didn't know what else to call them. They were a vision, like a dream! Ok, no fear here, AMEN! And when we see Jesus and Moses next time, we'll know it's all real, too! Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly!

Venturing out in between heaven's showers, during Mascot's nap, Warrior and Student assisted Teacher with some bicycle surgery.



The 16mm wrench just wouldn't budge with the force of Teacher's muscles, though. Oh to have the power of Principal around. Unsuccessful, Student and Warrior opted to finish the afternoon indoors with a little drama of King and Knight with a baby dragon arousing in the cave...



In preparation for AWANA, Warrior made of list of the ways he has loved his neighbor and helped them this week:
Loved Dad and helped find his pool stick
Loved Mom and helped do the dishes.
Loved Student and helped her when she was hurt.
Loved Mascot and kept him safe by holding him correctly.

And congrats to Student who earned her Sparks review patch tonight! Only 4 more nights of Awana before summer break! Let the countdown begin!

Also in Homeschool, Toddler and Student took their sack lunches
and headed to the Rec Center. Jo and Nolan met them for
some ball-gun-matchbox-run-fun! That gym hadn't seen action like
that all day!

Back to the Homeschool, Student eagerly worked on her Awana memorization. She has now earned her jewel for knowing all 27 books of the New Testament! That vest is slowly looking more and more like a princess fashion accessory!

As for Toddler, he was still for the majority of his lesson. He caught up his verses and hid his new on in his heart, too. It was the Apple tree activity that threw him overboard! Making use of the sit-and-listen times he has during the day is a constant puzzle Teacher is trying to solve. His best learning times, differ from day-to-day. His interest peeks at different incriments. But, trying to check-off Awana from our list today, Teacher hurried the activity, and it lasted for 2 minutes!



We were trying to create a good-smelling spice blend like the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus. Teacher was hoping he'd smell some that weren't his favorite and then others he did want to include in his mixture. And, he got a waft of 2, including garlic powder and cinnamon, and called it GOOD! (The fuzz in the left corner is his hair...that's as still as he stood!)

Student was moving today, too! She moved her bike for 3 miles along the creek path! She had the blessed-sight of observing the geese flying patterns above, hence, she picked the blog title today.What a girl, what a pixie! She loves to note the name of her vintage schwinn, pixie it is! One pivk pixie that's preparing her legs for indoor soccer season!



Reviewing how many more story problems in Math, Student moved on to discover the thousands place. Reviewing calendar facts as well, she was sure that their 10 months in a season, til she was assured by Teacher that if Winter lasted 10 months, we'd have to pray about MOVING!

Introduction to Electricity

Thanks to Principal, Student's introduction to electricity was completed in Computer. Uncovering some visuals through a handy-dandy site, Student's brain began to complete the circuit of learning! Getting some extra practice on engineeringinteract.org, she began connecting definitions of new words and symbols for diagrams.

WooHoo! Student has begun a new journey in Science! And a Homeschool lesson can only be complete with School House Rock!

"It's Schoolhouse Rocky. That chip off the block Of your favorite schoolhouse. Schoolhouse Rock!"

As for Toddler, his Awana lessons are getting caught up, little by little. His verse memorization is trying not to overload!

He is trying to master his letter flashcards. And yes, those are alien fingers floating on the side...Principal and Student love their air-time!

Preparing for her weekend interview, Student has completed her list of questions for our Brazilian-native friend. I can't wait to hear more from this annointed follower of Jesus. She always has such grrreat God stories!

Seatwork applause in Math and Phonics today. Student continued work on the clock and skip counting. It's so encouraging to see the ways of her God-given brain suck up all the information. Story problems are her favorite! Gotta give God credit for that!

History began the adventure of King Solomon's reign in I Kings today. Student was so excited to hear of The Queen of Sheba. Royalty is always welcome in her book!

With the influence of Principal, Student etched her version of a race car today! Art takes form in everything.

"A tool is what you make it!" said Mr. Olais. And that is our newly adopted motto at the Homeschool.

Finishing a cozy day at Homeschool, the snow began to fall. Out came the caroling books, and Student's voice filled the air. Toddler covered Teacher's mouth, Mascot nursed and Principal took it all in. That's another blessed day on the thankful list at Homeschool.

Aside from computer and writing, Student wrote sos notes from a princess for her handwriting! What else can be expected from a Royal Student?

A visit from Papa D, and preparation for Awana, along with the seatwork...this has been an official day of homeschool!

Red Jewel

Student is working on hiding the verses in her heart from Awana. In Sparks, one has certain verses in the "red jewel" section to learn...of course we wonder why they don't call it the RUBY section, since we are all about being virtuous women of God. But, alas, I guess the boys in Sparks care nothing about being a virtuous woman!

Seatwork in Math is filled with much work on counting coins. Even the word problems are oney oriented, how did Grammie know when she sent the card in the mail full of quarters that it would be a continuing of Student's Math? Just another God connection!

Reading through Numbers lessons, we will read of the life in Canaan and worked with the globe and maps to spot the 12 tribes of Israel and their locations. We shall continue map work and read onto Deuteronomy. As our Illustrated Children's Bible skips around a bit, we'll continue right into Joshua and look forward to adding American history next semester!

And for the family of Christopher Klicka we are actively praying and praising his passing this week. Praise God for those He calls and they obey and answer! Klicka's work in homeschooling was an encouragement...wonder what goals God has set for us?

In preparation for our field trip to Lindsborg this weekend for the festival, student is doing a mini-unit to learn about Sweden! And, yes, she'll have a full report of the food afterwards! That is if her Uncle Ed leaves any for her...just remember the cotton candy episode at World's of Fun this summer? The picture shows Student's self-lead project of a windmill, minus a brad, as our homeschool needs to take a trip to the office supply store...so it fits right in with our pre-Sweden studies!

Lindsborg's Svensk Hyllningsfest is a biennial tribute to the Swedish pioneers occurring in October of odd numbered years. The festival features art, crafts, special foods, ethnic music, folk dancing, parade, smörgåsbord, and special entertainment.

History continues in Exodus chapters 2-4. Before thumbing through the dictionary as well as listening for the keywords in the lesson, Student familiarizes herself with the new vocabulary words and forms a hypothesis as to their definitions:

fled: leading to something

cruel: steal or take in a mean way

Practicing writing each vocab word in cursive, Student carefully looks at the example letters and connects to complete each word. Her concentration is focused her into tunnel vision! I'll be sure to start doing a pupil check at the end of each cursive session!

Seatwork in Phonics and Language are spread out through the day among the Math ones. It is a bit overwhelming when Student sees the stack in the morning! Reminding her that we will complete only what we can, with no pressure and not all at once, helps her begin breathing again!

Studying up for Awana tomorrow, Student hides The Word in her heart.

We have not really sorted our outings between recess and PE, so we are deciding to call all outdoor or active time activity. How does one sort through all of the labels of blogs anyhow? We are trying to have a rhyme and reason meshed with consistency...as long as there is no test on it! As for activity, Toddler baseball and biking 2.5 miles, with a donut break in between, brought our hearts happiness and our brains oxygen today!
